The Portable Spaces: Remapping Lausanne, 2021

    Editorial design | 3D Graphics

The urban environment hosts half of the worlds’ population today. Defined by its blocks, concrete structures and towers, it is a type of settlement that is constantly expanding. In the context of the city, public spaces are of major importance and influence, they dictate certain dynamics, activities and aesthetics. A city’s infrastructure is ever evolving, built around the public space, it is driven by necessity and scale and by local communities and their cultures which overlap through the physical boundary. We wanted to map out the visual culture and mood of the city we currently inhabit and explore the urban mechanisms and visual motifs that constitute it.

In our exploration of the public space, we built the book on two photographic styles / techniques: street photography and photogrammetry. Despite coming from different ages of image making, they share the purpose of accurately depicting the world. Originally a technique created to bring elements of the world into the digital realm, we use photogrammetry as a street photography tool which serves in analysing fragments of the city’s visual fabric.

Alternating the focus between green spaces and buildings, elements of Lausanne’s identity as well as fragments that could not be immediately give away any particular city in Europe, we wanted to build a narrative that gives the feeling of a long walk someone would go on when first discovering the city, seen from our perspective, as foreigners ourselves.

    In collaboration with Tickie Bindner.
